Chennai:The city police have arrested two persons in connection with the country bomb explosion at Anna Salai, Teynampet yesterday.
Police took into custody the owner of a two-wheeler (which was used by a duo to hurl bomb on a moving four-wheeler) and the mechanic who sold the vehicle to him.
Sources said, the two-wheeler belonged to one Raja Devadas of T Nagar. The vehicle was being used by his son Mahesh (17), a student of Government Arts College at Nandanam.
Mahesh and his friend Akash (17) were allegedly using the bike yesterday. Police are investigating if the duo carried out the attack or if Mahesh had given the vehicle to someone else.
However, the duo are absconding and their phones are switched off, police said. Unconfirmed reports also claimed that the attackers targetted gangster ‘Kakka Thoppu’ Balaji who is said to have been in the car.
A history-sheeter from North Chennai, Balaji had come out on bail few weeks ago. Police have taken Raja Devadas and the mechanic into custody for questioning.
Soon after the incident Tuesday, City Commissioner A K Viswanathan had formed three special teams to investigate the case and one team is carrying out inquiries in Thiruvannamalai.
Two bike-borne men hurled the country bomb aiming at a Fortuner car on the busy Anna Salai stretch at 4 pm yesterday. Even as the motorists and the occupants of the car escaped unhurt, surprisingly, the two-wheeler and the car sped away from the spot.
The police managed to trace the two-wheelers registration number through CCTV footage.
