Water to be released from Mettur dam for irrigation

Chennai: The State government has announced that Cauvery water from Mettur dam will be released for irrigation purpose 19 July.

The water will be used for irrigating the samba crop and flood warning has been issued to settlements near the river basin.

The water release will be able to fill 700 lakes and tanks in the river basin. This water will be used for irrigation and drinking purposes, said sources.

A statement from Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said the decision was made as the water level in the dam had risen to 89.18 feet and inflow was 99,372 cusecs. The storage at present is 51.72 tmc ft.
