Velmurugan arrested for toll plaza violence

Chennai: Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK) founder-leader, T Velmurugan, was arrested and remanded today in judicial custody for 15 days in Puzhal prison for ransacking a toll plaza during the Cauvery protests carried out by his outfit on 1 April.

Reports have emerged that his followers engaged in a road roko protest and even stopped police vehicles at Madapattu, in Ulundurpet, demanding his release.

Velmurugan was on way from Villupuram to Thoothukudi to meet the families of the victims of police firing yesterday. As, Section 144 is in force in the area, the Villupuram police prevented him from going to Thoothukudi and arrested him.

As per sources, he was housed in a marriage hall along with other members of political parties.

However, sources today said he was arrested for ransacking toll plazas on 1 April, when his political outfit protested demanding the formation of the Cauvery Water Management Board. He was produced in the Tirukovilur magistrate court today, which ordered him to be remanded in judicial custody for 15 days in Puzhal prison.
