Sterlite: Protests continue in Tuticorin

Chennai: Protests continued in Tuticorin even today as thousands including children and the elderly gathered demanding the closure of Sterlite industries.

Alleging pollution and water contamination due to Sterlite Industries, there were protests happening in and around Tuticorin SIPCOT.

Much recently, expansion works began in the facility much to the dismay of residents of the locality. They even gave a representation to Tuticorin District Collector.

People at the protest alleged that the factory let out harmful effluents and smoke that polluted ground water, soil and air. They added that the government should take necessary steps to close the Sterlite Industries within the city.

It may be recalled that Makkal Needhi Maiam founder Kamal Haasan took to Twitter to voice his support for the protests. The actor-turned-politician wrote, "This anti -sterlite peoples agitation needs media support. My new status as a party leader need not be a disqualification or a deterent. I am still part of the Tamizh population. I am committed to this cause".

Shut it, says Stalin
DMK working president MK Stalin today urged the State government tp take steps to ensure Sterlite facility is shut immediately. He said, "The emissions from these industries are harmful for people and should be curbed at the earliest. If our requests are not paid heed to, we will soon be organising a massive protest."
