Situation under control in Thoothukudi: DGP

Chennai: Taking stock of the violence in Thoothukudi, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami is holding a high-level meeting at the Secretariat.

Speaking to mediapersons after the meeting with Palaniswami, DGP T K Rajendran said the situation was under control at Thoothukudi and asked people not to panic. He also said an inquiry will be conducted to ascertain if there were gunshots. Senior police officials have already left for Pearl City by flight.

Sources said Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, Chief Secretary Girija Vaidhayanathan, and other senior ministers took part in the meeting.

Sources said Palaniswami has been briefed about the current crisis in Thoothukudi.

DMK working president M K Stalin said the violence could have been avoided if proper precautionary measures had been taken. He also stressed that the government failed to hold talks with the protesters.

Makkal Needhi Maiam founder Kamal Haasan has also condemned the shooting of the police.
