Salem-Chennai corridor must for TN, says CM

Chennai: The eight-lane Salem-Chennai green corridor is needed due to increase in number of vehicles. Farmers are voluntarily giving their lands for the project to be implemented, said Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami.

The Chief Minister reached Salem this morning to take part in various programmes.

Addressing mediapersons at Salem airport, the Chief Minister said, "There are traffic jams due to increase in number of vehicles. There is an urgent need to lay new roads and widen those existing. Hence the eight-lane Salem-Chennai green corridor needs to be completed soon."

He said, "Farmers are voluntarily giving their lands for the project to be implemented. They will be given right compensation. Four out of 100 farmers are not ready to give their lands for the project. Only those who give their lands are given assistance by the Central and State governments. The compensation amount is huge compared to those given for land acquisitions during the DMK regime."

If the project is implemented, it would benefit all. The Centre has been providing all help for the Salem- Chennai green corridor scheme, Palaniswami said and added, "There is an urgent need to expand Salem airport to ensure more job opportunities are created in the district."

He also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to privatise Salem steel plant.

Meanwhile in a letter to Union Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabu, the Chief Minister wanted to operationalise the Hosur airport and commence flight operations to Neyveli and Ramanathapuram under the UDAN scheme.

He said Hosur was an important industrial hub in Krishnagiri district, which was selected under the UDAN Scheme in the first phase and flight operations were yet to start for want of No Objection Certificate from the Bangalore International Airport.

"The Hosur Airport, will be an engine of growth to the industrial hub of Krishnagiri and neighbouring districts," he added.

Stating that it would help in developing the Chennai-Bangalore Industrial Corridor, Palaniswami urged him to instruct the Civil Aviation authorities

to make Hosur airport operational immediately.

'Don't comment on judgements'
Urging politicians not to pass comments on judgements delivered by the courts, the Chief Minister said, "The disqualification case of 18 AIADMK MLas is still pending before the court. I wish no one pass their comments on the issue. Justice is common to all."
