Rameswaram ammo to be produced in court

Chennai: Following the recovery of a big stock of weapons from Rameswaram, superintendent of police Omprakash Meena today said the rifles and other stuff were almost 25 years old and might have been used during the LTTE war of the mid-1980s in Sri Lanka.

The weapons will be produced in the Madras High Court in a couple of days and then discarded safely.

A huge consignment of ammunition and explosives was unearthed near Thangachimadam in Rameswaram on Monday evening.

Over 5,000 bullets, explosives, 22 boxes of large machine guns were a part of it. The stash came to light after Edison, a resident of Anthoniyarpuram, found a box of bullets while constructing a septic tank Monday.

Edison alerted the police. With an earthmover, police dug up the spot and recovered the ammunition and weapons.
