Quake measuring 3.3 on Richter felt in Salem district

Salem: People ran out of houses in panic, as an earthquake measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale was felt in  some parts of Salem district today.

Indian Meteorological department sources said the quake was felt at around 8 am. Salem District Collector Ms Rohini R Bhgajibhakare said no

damages or casualties were reported because of the quake.

The tremors were felt in Mettur, where the dam's level stood  at 117 ft and fast filling to its full level of 120 ft, Omalur and Tharamangalam.

The tremors lasted about four to five seconds. Panic gripped the people, who ran out of their hosues and rushed to open spaces.

The Collector urged the people not to panic and appealed to them not to use elevators and take the stairs to climbdown.

She also advised the people to say in open places and avoid standing near congested buildings, hoardings and glass panels.

She also appelaed to the people to contact the 24 hour toll free helipline 1077 for any assistance.
