Chennai: Hours after his appointment was set aside by the Madras High Court on Thursday, former Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University, P P Chelladurai has said that he will be moving the apex court against the

High Court verdict.

Speaking to News Today, Chelladurai said, "I cannot comment on the verdict. But, if not now, at least in future, justice prevails. We will face it again in the Supreme Court."

He also said, "This is something pushed on us, for something we did not do."

The bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and M Sundar delivering the verdict said, "We  set aside the appointment on the ground that the proceedings of the Search Committee are flawed without expressing any opinion on eligibility and noticing Chelladurai has been dropped/deleted from the criminal case/chargesheet after further investigation."

It was on 27 May, Governor Banwarilal Purohit appointed Chelladurai as Vice-Chancellor of the university.

However, social activists Traffic Ramasamy and Lionel M Anthony Arulraj filed a PIL petition alleging that the incumbent was not at all eligible to be appointed as Vice-Chancellor as he lacked qualification.

In the PIL, the petitioners also had claimed that Chelladurai was going to make appointments to the university through illegal means. Following this, the bench ordered re-constitution of the Search Committee, quashing the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor.

"The new Search Committee so constituted shall embark upon  the process of selecting a panel of three names for appointment as Vice-Chancellor in accordance with Madurai Kamaraj University Act, 1965 and all other  applicable statutes, after due deliberations, consultations and discussions amongst themselves," the bench ordered.

Further, recommending constitution of a fresh Search Committee for nominating Vice-Chancellor to the university, the bench said "Considering the high office that is in question, the Vice-Chancellor of a reputed University like MKU, wherein the Vice-Chancellor shall not only be the academic head, but also the Chief Executive Officer of the entire university, we consider it necessary to take a view that the Search Committee has to be constituted afresh and the process of selection has to be redone."
