Chennai: With the State government making sure that the Rs 10,000-crore, Chennai-Salem eight-lane green corridor works progress, those fearing they might get affected by the project have started a unique way of protesting.

They will soon be sending more than 10,000 letters to the Chief Minister, Governor and Collector offices to grab the government's attention.

Ettu Vazhi Salai Ethiruppu Kottamaippu, a new association consisting of farmers, residents, NGOs, and political party functionaries based out of the districts this corridor is going to cover, has taken this initiative.

Association coordinator S Abiraman told News Today, "The government is controlling protests with the help of the police who are on an arresting spree. They are nabbing all those who are taking part in the protests. So, we have started a new initiative."

"By this weekend, in the first phase, we will be sending more than 10,000 letters through registered post with receipt to the offices of the CM, Governor and district collectors. These phase one letters will be from the affected people of Tiruvannamalai district alone and the rest of the districts' letters will follow next week. Each letter will individually represent a farmer or a resident who is affected and there will be no faking. The receipts from the registered posts will be used as proof that so and so farmers have been affected by the project," he added.

Abiraman also said, "Tiruvannamalai Collector K S Kandasamy and Salem Collector Rohini R Bhajiobhakare have announced a compensation of Rs 80,000 and Rs 50,000 for every full-grown tree that is going to be uprooted. But we believe this to be a lie to divert the attention of the protesters. Not only that, the government claims that more than 90 per cent of farmers support the project. The receipts we will be getting will speak for us. In addition, we will also be sending letters to NHAI, DRO and tahsildar offices."

The association, comprising 26 organisations and political parties under its wings, said it will also be aligning with Opposition parties in the State which support them.

So, the members will soon be taking part in all the meetings organised by these parties in their areas.

The association members are also in the process of meeting DMK working president M K Stalin and PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss.
