DMK president Stalin visits damaged Mukkombu regulator

Tiruchy/Chennai: DMK President M K Stalin today visited the Mukkombu regulator which was damaged recently.

He also enquired about the ongoing repair works from the officials.

Speaking to mediapersons, Stalin said,”The government failed to inspect the regulators before the rains. If that had been done, this mishap could have been avoided.”

He further said not even 40 per cent work has been completed and after 47 days of opening of the Mettur dam water has not reached the Kadaimadai region.

Nine out of the 45 gates of the 190-year-old Mukkombu regulator broke on 22 August.

As on Sunday evening 11,483 cusecs of water was being discharged into the Kollidam river from the Mukkombu barrage while, 5,732 cusecs of water ws flowing into the Cauvery.

Officials sources said the works to plug the discharge of water will be completed in a couple of days.

Stalin was also set to interact with farmers in the Cauvery delta districts in Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam to learn about the availability of water for irrigation.

The DMK chief who reached Tiruchy last night was given a warm welcome by the cadres as this was his first visit to the district after becoming the president of the party.

Meanwhile estranged Stalin's brother M K Alagiri today said that the silent procession on 5 September to former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi will take place as planned.

Addressing mediapersons at the Chennai airport today, he said,' I will not meet Stalin. Around one lakh cadres will take part in the procession during which we will display our strength'.
