Nagapattinam: The Draft Coastal Zone Management Plans (CZMP) prepared by the Centre is hostile to the livelihood of fishermen, MDMK General Secretary Vaiko said today.

Under the Draft Coastal Zone Management Plan, the Central government granted permission for the development of tourism and defence sectors, road infrastructure, and so on along the coast.

The draft plan also facilitates other Central government schemes like Sagar Mala and Blue Economy plans.

Fishermen belonging to the coastal districts like Nagapattinam are strongly opposing the draft plan as they believe that this affects their livelihood.

Speaking on the issue, Vaiko condemned the draft plan and asked the Centre to withdraw it. He said, 'The previous Coastal Zone Management Plans framed in 1991 is an obstacle for the Centre's proposed schemes.

This is why they have formed the new draft plan. The Centre is planning to gain complete control over the sea. This will severely affect the livelihood of the fisherfolk.'
