25 NLC workers attempt suicide

Chennai: Twenty five contract workers of integrated lignite mining company, NLC India Ltd attempted suicide together by consuming poison outside their workplace, pressing the authorities to cancel their transfer among other demands.

The shocking incident happened in front of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation's first 'A' mine where the 25 people are contracted to work on a temporary basis. According to sources, the workers arrived in their uniform and protested by raising slogans before ultimately drinking pesticide mixed in water. All 25 have been admitted to hospital nearby and their conditions are being monitored.

Latest reports say that they are all stable.

Reportedly, 1000s of NLC workers are employed on a contract basis in the mines and they have been demanding a permanent fixture for many years. Following a recent company decision to transfer a few of the contract workers to another site, they had resorted to many protests and negotiations with the management had allegedly failed to yield a result in their favour.
