Chennai: The maiden FOTNA Cup Yachting regatta is being jointly conducted by Indian Navy and Royal Madras Yachting Club (RMYC) in Harbour from 26 to 29 April.

Flag Officer Commanding, Tamilnadu and Puducherry Naval Area Rear Admiral Alok Bhatnagar speaking at a press meet here on Tuesday said the regatta being organised under the aegis of Yachting Association of India (YAI) will have participation by a variety of sail boats including 29ers, 49ers, Laser, J80, International 420, 470.  The event will be run in the pursuit format using the Internal Portsmouth Numbers, he said.

The participants will include teams from the services, clubs from different part of the country and students. The winners will be awarded the coveted the Indian Navy FOTNA Cup 2018.

The Indian Navy is a strong supporter of Yachting in India, especially for the youth. This is done through encouraging Yachting under the aegis of Indian Navy Sailing Association, which has 22 Indian Navy Waterman Ship Training Centres spread over various Naval stations in the country.

At the national level, YAI promotes yachting at all levels from grass root to professional level of yachting. Many clubs in the country including the Royal Madras Yacht Club are registered with YAI. RMYC's association with the Navy goes prior to 1980's when Commodore Harold Claudius an Officer in the Indian Navy nurtured the club and the sport of sailing at Chennai by encouraging student members to race.

In those days the fraternity was about 40 sailors and only 8 Boats. The old club house of RMYC was inaugurated by Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Tahiliani in 1987, a press release said.
