TNCA: Limited-overs league for women

Chennai: In a bid to develop and promote women's cricket in the State, the Tamilnadu Cricket Association has introduced a new ODI and T20 league for women cricketers.

The tournament was officially launched by former India cricketer Lakshmipathy Balaji at the TNCA club in MA Chidambaram stadium,

Chennai. Balaji unveiled the Indian Bank tournament trophy.

"Tamilnadu has the best organised league structure for men's cricket and in that way it is a very good starting point for women's cricket.

It will be an eye-opener and help bringing in lot of talents to the state side," said Balaji.

The league will be held from June 15 to June 30 featuring women cricketers from the state drafted into six teams - Blue Avengers, Green Invaders, Red Rangers, Silver Strikers, White Warriors and Yellow Challengers.

The matches will be held across four venues - Gandhinagar, University Union, CPT-IP (MAT) and St. Patricks and the finals will take place at

MAC Stadium. All matches will commence at 9 am.

Cricketer Niranjana Nagarajan who has represented India said that women cricketers from the State who have played international cricket

have been divided equally into the six teams."I have been waiting so long to play this kind of a tournament. There are so many raw talents

in many districts and this tournament will give them a platform to showcase their talent," she said. She leads the team Green Invaders.

"After India reached the final of the Women's World Cup last year, lot of youing girls come forward to take up cricket as their profession

and it is a right time to start a women's league and I am sure that the state team would get some talented fresh faces through this

league," she said.
