Hi-5 for India on Day 5 at CWG

Chennai: On day five, India picked up a gold, three silvers and one bronze medals at the ongoing Commonwealth games in Gold Coast. India now stands at third place in the medal tally.

India’s five medals today have come from 10m shooting (four in total) and one from weightlifting.

They are expected to add more to its tally as Indian lifters are still in contention in several categories. Apart from weightlifting, events such as wrestling and shooting are yet to begin. India has sent a strong contingent for both sports.

While in team events, India is likely to win a few medals in badminton, table tennis, hockey, lawn

bowls and squash. In the track and field events, India is pinning its hopes on Delhi youngster Neeraj

Chopra who will be participating in the javelin throw.

He is the U-20 world record holder in javelin throw. Today, in the women's 10m air rifle event, Mehuli Ghosh and Apurvi Chandela bagged silver and bronze respectively. Indian weight-lifter Pardeep Singh won silver in the men's 105 kilogram category. Pardeep lifted 152 kg in snatch and 200 kg in clean and jerk to register a total of 352 kg.

Unfortunately, India's Lalchhanhimi finished eighth in women's 90kg weightlifting with a combined lift of 194kg. India's Purnima Pandey finished sixth in women's 90kg weightlifting with a total lift of 212kg. Smit Singh is still in 6th place but has closed the gap down to fourth and fifth place competitors.

India beat Kenya 21-12 in men's singles section A - round 1 in Lawn bowls. Boxer Manish Kaushik beat Trinidad and Tobago's Michael Alexander to enter men's 60kg quarters.

Earlier, Lima Das qualified for the women's 400 meter finals after finishing third in Heat 5.
