Chennai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on cloud nine. He is the third most followed among rulers worldwide and second most influential leader on the micro-blogging site - Twitter. The results came out from a survey, Twiplomacy, undertaken by communications agency BCW.

Modi is now only behind US President Donald Trump and Pope Francis of Vatican city who have 52 and 47 million followers. 'Twitter accounts @NarendraModi and @PMOIndia take the third and fourth spot with 42 million and 26 million followers making him the most influential leader on Twitter,' Twiplomacy said.

"Modi's institutional account @PMOIndia outranks even official Twitter account of the US President @POTUS which takes fifth spot while @WhiteHouse ranks sixth with over 23 million and 17 million followers," it added.

The report said India's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj is the most followed woman leader in the world and occupies seventh spot in overall ranking.

"With over 11 million followers, Swaraj is not only the most followed female world leader but also the most followed Foreign Minister in the world," Twiplomacy said.

The study analysed the activity of 951 Twitter accounts of heads of State, government and Foreign Ministers for a year from May 2017 to May 2018 using aggregate data from Crowdtangle.com, a content discovery and social monitoring platform.

97% leaders have Twitter accounts
According to Twiplomacy, 'The heads of State and government and Foreign Ministers of 187 countries had a presence on Twitter as of 18 May, 2018, representing 97 per cent of all 193 UN member States.

The governments of only six countries namely Laos, Mauritania, Nicaragua, North Korea, Swaziland and Turkmenistan do not have an official presence on the platform. Even the Chinese government's State Council Information Office has presence on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.'
