Kottayam: A major disaster was averted Friday after guards on a running goods train, comprising petrol and kerosene wagons, noticed fire in a bogie and alerted the loco pilot who brought it to a halt.

Traffic was disrupted for at least two hours and restored after fire force personnel doused the fire, railway officials said.

The incident occurred at around 1.30 pm near Kottayam railway station, disrupting traffic through the single line near Kottayam, railway officials said.

The train is currently stationed at Chingavanam railway station. It will leave after a thorough safety check today, they added.
