Chennai: Work on Pedestrian Plaza, announced as part of Smart City project for Pondy Bazar at T Nagar, got a kickstart this morning, as bhoomi pooja was performed near the junction of Theyagaraya Road-Chevaliar Sivaji Ganesan Salai.
Municipal Administration Minister S P Velumani, Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar and officials of Greater Chennai Corporation headed by its Commissioner D Karthikeyan were present on the occasion.
The project estimated at Rs.33.80 crore will cover exclusive pedestrian pathway facilitating senior citizens, children and differently-abled people, Other facilities include children’s play area, upgraded toilet facilities, resting places for the shoppers and pedestrians, decorative lamps, fountains and crossing area.
The entire strtch of Theyagaraya Road is divided into three parts between Panagal Park and Thanikachalam Street (730 metres), Thanikachalam Road-Boag Road (380 metres) and Boag Road-Anna Salai (565 metres) to facilitate smooth implementation of the project and traffic diversion will be made according to requirements. As a first step, vehicles like buses and two wheelers will only be allowed in first part of the project, officials said.
Speaking to News Today, a senior official of Chennai Corporation said, “as part of Smart City project, work is already under progress at various parks in T Nagar and a multi-level parking facility at Pondy Bazaar area. Pedestrian Plaza work will also be commenced simultaneously and will be implemented as per schedule”.
The civic body has also displayed banners highlighting the sketch of the proposed project at different locations in Pondy Bazaar and the officials were seen explaining the features to the visitors and passerby.
