Society comes first for Chennai suburban resident

Chennai: For us, family comes first among priorities. But for R Balachandar, a resident of Jothi Nagar, Chitlapakkam, in the city suburb, society comes first.

The 28-year-old cab driver is a prominent person in the locality, known for his generosity in serving the public.

From volunteering during floods to registering complaints on civic issues, he has taken up many initiatives - both on civic and environmental fronts.

He has lodged around 300 complaints this year, of which only about 80 issues are still unresolved.

With the northeast monsoon setting in, Balachandar is preoccupied with rain-related activities. "Due to a blocked culvert at Manimekhalai Street, the water got diverted to Chokanathan Street and stood about two feet high. Fortunately, I was able to figure out the root cause. I immediately deployed an earthmover and cleared the block, after which the water flowed freely," he said.

He contacted authorities to come and inspect the area, and also escorted special officer Amudha while inspecting the area and throwing light upon the immediate action to be taken in diverting the rainwater.

Joining hands with Chitlapakkam Rising, Balachandar has involved in tree planting, cleaning bad roads and the Pallavaram bridge, renovating Chrompet bus stop, painting the roads and walls to promote cleanliness.

During Cyclone Vardah, he had removed truckloads of green waste from the area.

He also plays a major role in saving the Chitlapakkam Eri. He met former Kanchipuram collector Gajalakshmi to look into the bunds of the lake that were encroached. Joining hands with members of Chitlapakkam Rising, he took up tree plantation drive around the lake. They have also filed a PIL concerned over the encroachments.

Balachandar also spends time with school students by conducting  special classes, taking them for excursions and even providing RO filter in a school.

Balachandar can be reached at 86084 09553.
