Kollywood pays tribute to cinematographer Priyan

Chennai: Kollywood is shocked with the sudden demise of cinematographer Priyan (55). A regular for almost all the films of director Hari, he passed away due to cardiac arrest.

Worked as an assistant to legendary cinematographer Balu Mahendra, Priyan handled the cinematography for director K S Ravikumar in Thenali and Cheran’s initial films like Por Kaalam and Desiya Geetham. He also worked in the first two schedules of director Hari’s upcoming film Saamy-2 with Chiyaan Vikram. Vel,  Aaru, Singam series and Velayutham were few of films which Priyan cranked camera.

Early days under Balu Mahendra
Priyan assisted Balu Mahendra in Moondram Pirai (1982), Malayalam film Olangal, Sadma and Yatra. He had also worked Mani Ratnam’s Pagal Nilavu and Nayagan. Though he was mentored by Balu Mahendra, known for known for working in realistic themes, Pryan always had the fantasy to be part of action films and stories that are larger-than-life. He made his foray as cinematographer in 1995 with Thottachinungi.

A director’s delight
Many in the industry describe Priyan as a delight for filmmakers. He worked with Cheran in few films. According to Cheran, “Priyan is a wonderful craftsmen. His ideas were good. He was interactive. I have fond memories of working with him in couple of my movies. His use of colours and choice of lights always impressed me.”

Hari shocked
Priyan, known for his collaboration with director Hari, has done nearly 13 films with him. He started shooting for Saamy Square, a sequel to Saamy that starred actor Vikram and directed by Hari.

Shocked Hari expressed his heartfelt condolence on Priyan’s demise. “Mere words cannot fully express the sorrow I feel after hearing about the sudden passing away of Priyan.. one of the sweetest people I have ever met in my life.”

“It’s a huge loss for everyone who has been touched by this gentle person. May his soul rest in peace,” said Vikram in an Instagram post.
He also deferred the title launch of his son’s Dhruv’s debut film, which is the remake of Telugu hit Arjun Reddy, as a mark of respect for Priyan.

Celebs mourn
“It was a pleasure working with Priyan Sir. My sincere condolences and prayers to his family. May his soul rest in peace,” tweeted singer-actor Krish.
On her part, Hansika, said, “I had the opportunity to work with him in few of my movies. Can’t believe it, still in shock. Prayers to his family.”

In his tribute, Tamil Film Producers Council president Vishal, said, “Words fall short of expressing my sorrow for the loss of my good friend and  well wisher Priyan. We have lost a good human. May his soul rest in peace.” said actress Khushbu Sundar.

His movies
He was part of films including Suriya’s Singam series, Vijay’sVelayutham, Kamal Haasan’s Thenali, Vikram’s Saamy and Arul, Vishal’s Poojai among others.
