Chennai: Actor Kamal Haasan left for Kolkata today to attend the inauguration of Kolkata International Film Festival which would be inaugurated by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Sources say that he would meet the Trinamool Congress leader after the event and hold discussions on various issues.
The seven-day film festival begins at Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata in the presence of a galaxy of stars.
Actors Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Kamal Haasan, along with director Mahesh Bhatt, will attend the inaugural ceremony, which will be preceded by a cultural event.
The meeting between Kamal and Mamata assumes significance after the former had announced that he has entered politics. The actor had meet Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal recently.
The actor, who announced his decision to take the political plunge, had announced on his birthday (7 November) that he will be going on a tour across Tamilnadu to understand people’s problems before officially launching his party.
Announcing the launch of an app to interact with his supporters, Kamal said, “I do not want to be to the left or the right, but be at the centre.”
The actor has alleged rampant corruption in Tamilnadu which incurred him the wrath of State Ministers. Also, his alleged comments on ‘Hindu extremism’ won him condemnation from State BJP leaders. Even cases were booked against him in Uttar Pradesh for his remarks.
Amidst such a crucial scenario, his meeting with Mamata, who vociferously opposes Prime Minister Narendra Modi, assumes great significance.
MINISTER JAYAKUMAR TOO IN WB
When actor Kamal Haasan is in Kolkata to attend the annual international film festival, his bitter critic and Tamilnadu Minister D Jayakumar is also there. The latter is part of the crucial GST Council Meeting that is under way today.
