Helpline numbers not usable during rains

Chennai: The State government has acted immediately to tackle floods by allocating special officers in every locality and releasing the helpline numbers for all departments.

However, residents from Nanganallur in the city suburb are up in arms against the officials as the response seems to be poor or mediocre.

A resident of Nilamangai Nagar of Adambakkam, in the locality, N V Sampath, said his efforts to reach through to the officer, in-charge of Alandur and Sholinganallur taluks in Kanchipuram district, went in vain.

“‘It was around 2.15 am on Friday that the flood water entered my flat. There was a chance of flood waters touching the EB meter cabin. Worried, I called up the Vanuvampet EB office landline. As the lines were busy, I called Mr Madhavan, the special officer, to disconnect the EB line,’” narrated Sampath.

The response from the officer was not shocking as he, in the style of any other government official, disconnected the call. ‘

He immediately switched off his mobile after my call. He would have forgotten that he gets his salary on taxpayers’ money,’ said Sampath.

He tried the electricity board office and got the line disconnected soon. ‘I thank the Vanuvampet EB crew for coming here amid heavy rain and getting the job done,’ he added.

In yet another complaint, a resident, Karthika Nair, couldn’t contact the corporation helpline to report about water-logging.

“I contacted the corporation helpline 1913 and was kept on the line for at least 20 minutes. I lost my patience and disconnected the call without complaining,” she said.

Though it is known that helplines would be busy with umpteen calls, it is necessary to deploy enough officers to meet emergency needs, she opined.
