Chennai: In a bid to make roads safe for pedestrians, the Greater Chennai Corporation has decided to lay more speed breakers in Valasaravakkam and its neighbouring areas in the city.
According to Corporation sources, the civic body will be providing new speed breakers in the interior streets of Ward 149, 150, 151, 152 and 155, which comprise areas like Valasaravakkam, Alwarthirunagar, Porur, Ramapuram and Karambakkam.
The Corporation has allocated Rs 11.45 lakh for laying the speed bumps. Sources also added that the new speed breakers will be coming up near schools, market areas and at busy junctions in the localities.
The speed breakers will be constructed in confirmation with the specifications mandated by the Indian Road Congress (IRC). The IRC guidelines suggest three types of speed breakers to be installed according to the requirement, such that it regulates vehicle speed at 25 km/hr, 15 km/hr or 10 km/hr.
It can be noted that the existing speed breakers in some pockets of Valasaravakkam and Alwarthirunagar disappeared when the roads were relaid. Madurai Meenakshi Nagar in Valasaravakkam and Ramesh Nagar in Alwarthirunagar are some of the areas which witnessed the problem.
Meanwhile, areas like Periyar Nagar in Alwarthirunagar suffer from battered speed bumps which pose tough ride to motorists. The speed breakers in our area cause more harm than providing safety to us.
“They are severely damaged and are left unnoticed for years,” says R Madhavan, a resident of Periyar Nagar.
