Chennai: It was a pride moment for Poyyamozhi, a porter at Tambaram Railway Station when he was appreciated by Divisional Railway Manager of Chennai Division Naveen Gulati for his honesty on Wednesday.

He recovered a lost travel bag at the station that had cash in it and alerted the authorities who in turn helped it restore to the owner.

According to a Southern Railway press release, Poyyamozhi noticed an unclaimed bag at Tambaram Station on 1 November soon after Salem - Chennai Egmore Express left Platform No 5 at 3.45 am.

A casual perusal of the bag revealed cash and he immediately alerted the duty pointsman and Station Master, who in turn alerted the Railway Protection Force at Tambaram. RPF's examination of the bag revealed presence of Rs 5,75,720 along with used clothes.

While RPF lost no time in tracing the passenger in the train that was about to reach Chennai Egmore, the passenger gave a complaint upon realising he lost the bag after getting down at Chennai Egmore.

When passenger offered reward upon knowing that the bag was recovered owing to Poyyamozhi's alertness, the porter refused to receive it saying he was just doing his duty.

Chennai Division Divisional Railway Manager Naveen Gulati praised Poyyamozhi when he visited Tambaram Station on Wednesday and presented him a memento (a small model of a railway coach from the Rail Museum) as a token of appreciation from the Railways.
It is worth recalling that on an earlier occasion, Poyyamozhi had reunited runaway children with their parents while serving at the station.
