Chennai: Away from the bustling traffic, Sankaranthi in Anna Nagar East is located in a quiet location, where one can dine in peace. The multi-cuisine restaurant offers authentic Andhra food along with a mix of Chinese, north Indian and Tandoori items.
Sankaranthi – Everyday festival, is named after the Sankaranthi festival that is celebrated in Andhra Pradesh with much pomp. This celebration is also associated with varieties of local cuisines.
Large printing blocks, glass bangles and silk sarees form the decore. These are a reminder of what the State is famous for – weaving.
Even more welcoming are the wooden tables stocked with gongura pachadi, aavaakai pickle, garlic podi, dal podi and sesame oil along with a basket of papads.
The table mats also served as information mats as they are filled with information about the spices such as garlic, pepper, green chillies, ginger, that are widely used in cooking.
We started with Mamsam Mirapakai soup (Mutton pepper broth) that had chunks of boiled mutton along with cut chillies, coriander, curry leaves with moderate amount of pepper.
The broth was tasty with the pepper taste intact. The mutton pieces were tad hard but chewy. Then came the starters. Kodi 555, which are chicken strips dipped in secret spice batter, tossed in garlic and green chillies.
Akukoora vada, came in piping hot. These fritters were made up with leafy vegetables. The crispy starter is a hit among children, who don’t like spinach.
Then came the Mirapakai Chepa. Fish fillets were cooked in batter and onions. The fish was soft and delicious. Then the staple gobi manchurian won our appreciation.
But nothing could match the taste of Punugulu, a savoury snack that is prepared using rice. This common street food was deep fried in oil. It was soft and was served with tomato chutney. The dish gave a feel-at-home pleasure to whoever miss this native snacks.
In the main course their Sankaranthi Bojanam is a must have. This non-vegetarian thali comprised of rice, chappathi, veg birinji, gravies – chicken, mutton, egg and fish, sambar, rasam, keerai masiyal, tomato pachadi, curd and payasam. There is also a veg option here. Priced at Rs 275, the huge plate is more than filling.
The Mamsam Vepudu biriyani had fried pieces of mutton cooked in dum style. The meat pieces were huge and the taste gave a typical Andhra taste.
The Nattukodi biriyani prepared with country fowl taste different from the usual biriyani and was welcoming.
In the desserts, the Junnu brought in mixed response as it was served warm with a dash of pepper. This could also be had cold.
Junnu is prepared from the first milk of a cow. It is soft that it melts in your mouth. They also have a variety of ice creams. One should also try their Kurbani ka meet, a sweet made with apricot and served with vanilla ice cream.
