Chennai: The recent annual general body meeting of the Anna University Teachers Association (AUTA) was an intense affair, with the members discussing several key resolutions and grievances.
The minutes of the meeting, a copy of which is available with News Today, scrutinises the behaviour of some officers in the university, and the administrative action against two professors, apart from the primary issue of the absence of a Vice-Chancellor, which is allegedly affecting the promotion of many senior professors and other functions.
The meeting also noted the demeaning behaviour of some of the officers, while handling the queries of faculty members, over their delayed promotions.
Different rules for different people question the very sense of fair play, it added. A teacher says, “It was like we are carrying begging bowls. Some get biriyani in it and many get leftover curd rice. The former are elated, while the others, depressed.”
The AUTA also passed a resolution to condemn the punishment of cut in a year’s increment, awarded to its president Dr I Aul Aram and secretary Dr S Chandramohan, for airing views for speedy appointment of a Vice-Chancellor. The Association wants the punishment to be withdrawn unconditionally.
About the absence of a Vice Chancellor, the minutes of the meeting said, “It is regretted that the premier University is without this position for one-and-half years. AUTA unanimously wants the Honourable Chancellor (Tamilnadu Governor) either to appoint the senior-most Professor as Vice-Chancellor (officiating), as had been the precedence or a convener committee of three professors of Anna University, headed by the senior-most professor, for which too, there is precedence.”
AUTA also wanted all positions of Head/Directors to be on a rotational basis.
Further, it said that the posts of the Registrar and the controller of Examinations should be filled by open advertisements and interviews, as done in all other State universities. Since the term of the present Registrar is coming to an end, notification for call of applications should be given immediately.
The association also appealed Anna University to form a grievance cell in adherence with University Grants Commission (UGC) recommendations.
V-C post should be filled
Appointments, promotions should be transparent
Punishment on professors should be withdrawn
Grievance cell needed
