Heavy Chennai rain claims five lives in one night

Chennai: A total of five persons were killed in separate incidents due to the heavy rain that lashed the city last night here.

A contract labourer attached to the Public Works Department was washed away after he slipped into the Buckingham canal while on duty at Basin Bridge here last night.

The victim, Kamalesh, 19, was involved in removing waste from the tracks to avert water stagnation. He accidentally fell inside the canal, the police said.

In another incident, a 60-year-old man drowned near Vivekananda House here last night. Anna Square police have registered a complaint. Another 60-year-old, Rathya, died after the sidewall of her house at Ennore crashed on her.

A 24-year-old tea vendor, Prashant, was struck dead by lightning when he stood outside a shop located at T Nagar last night.  case has been registered with Teynampet police station.

In another mishap, a man died at Kalkuttai, Pallavaram.
