13-year-old badminton player is already an ace

Chennai: She not just has the flair, but also the focus to make it big in badminton. Meet R Srinidhi, a resident of Eleventh Sector, K K Nagar, who used to sit in the sector’s playground and watch others play. Considering her age,   she was not given a chance to play. But, when an opportunity was given, she proved her mettle.

“Seeing her play the game well, she was inducted into the team by senior players during this summer. They informed me that Srinidhi should be given proper training, so that it would take her on the right path in  badminton,” said the 13-year-old’s father, S Radhakrishnan, who works as an assistant director in Kollyhood.

Following well-wishers’ advice, Srinidhi, studying class IV at Sri Krishnaswamy Matriculation Higher Secondary School, joined the Commonwealth Sports Academy at K K Nagar.

“‘One month passed and her coach Bharathi said an inter-school badminton tournament was being conducted by Chennai Sports Academy, Velacheri. He asked us to go there as spectators. However, my daughter wanted to play. So, I paid the entry fee and she won first prize in under 11 girls singles category,” said Radhakrishnan.

Srinidhi then started to participate in various tournaments and won prizes. Her aim is to play at the national level and for this better coaching is needed. So, she joined NVBA Smash Bounce Sports Academy at Valasaravakkam, where individual attention is given. ‘There are 400 students and they are selected under three categories – Beginners, Intermediate and Advance. Seeing the potential in Srinidhi, she was selected under intermediate category,’ said Radhakrishnan.

“I am a great fan on P V Sindhu. My father used to download all her games and I would watch it. This helped me to know the nuances of the game. At present, I am going for coaching only for three days a week. I have to concentrate on my fitness. Once I am fit, I will take up training on all days,” said Srinidhi.

“She is our only daughter. My wife Rama Devi and I will support her in all ways to make her shine at the national level,” said Radhakrishnan.
