Chennai area turns hive for film shooting

Chennai: Situated in one of the busiest places in the city, there are nine acres of land that are being let out for film shooting at Bharathidasan Colony. The presence of four parks and roads that are maintained properly by the civic body throughout the year is enough to woo film crews.

Since 2010, around 20 Tamil films were shot in the colony, the latest being Suriya-starrer Thana Serndha Kootam, which is yet to be released.

‘With greenery all around and little traffic, the place is rented out for film shooting from 6 am to 6 pm. Before commencing the shooting, the crew has to apply to the association and get an NOC from them and also from the police,’ said

Bharathidasan Colony 642 Flats Owners Welfare Association president D Manoharan.

‘A few houses are also rented out for shooting. However, the film crew should see that it does not disturb the neighbours.

If there is any complaint, the shooting will be cancelled immediately,’ he said.

He further said during school examination time, film shootings will not be allowed in the colony as it would distract the children.

The film crew are also allowed to use the association’s community hall for cooking purposes. At the end of the day, they should clean the premises, he added.

The money collected from the shootings are used for association activities, Manoharan said.

The cordial relationship with the film industry has helped the association in inviting actors for functions that take place in the colony. They are also roped in for civic activities: Actor Suriya planted a sapling in the colony to compensate the lost ones during Cyclone Vardah. ‘We planted around 100 saplings in the colony,’ said Manoharan.

Manoharan can be reached at 95000 27909.
