Chennai: Volunteers of Pasumai Tamilnadu, an NGO based out of Ambattur, conducted a palm seed sowing drive on the bunds of Puzhal lake between Kallikuppam and Red Hills on Sunday afternoon.
Speaking to News Today, event coordinator, Srinivasan, said, “To save palm trees from getting extinct, we organised this initiative. Volunteers came all the way from Tambaram, Korattur and Sriperumbudur. We covered over a quarter of the lake’s bunds. These seeds when grown into palm trees will prevent the bunds from getting eroded. In addition, they will also help in better water retention.”
Santhosh, a volunteer, said, “For past one month, I have involved myself in palm seed plantations across Chennai with the help of volunteers and volunteering groups. But, most of the plantation seems to happening in southern areas such as Perungalathur, Tambaram, etc. So, this week, we thought of doing the activity at Puzhal.”
Around 120 palm seeds collected from various donors and volunteers were sown. Along with the seed sowing activity, the team also planted a Pipal tree and cleared Seemai Karuvelam trees from the bunds. It is learnt that the team also planted saplings here earlier but, unfortunately, they have been uprooted by some miscreants. The team had also sown around 500 to 1,000 palm seeds in Iyapakkam and Ambattur lakes, an year ago. At present, they have planned to sow palm seeds in Korattur lake on 17 September.
“With help from volunteers Ramesh and Ganapathy, we are planning to organise a similar drive at Korattur with over 150 palm seeds on coming Sunday. We need large number of palm seeds and volunteers for our upcoming activities and request residents to participate in the drive,” Srinivasan added.
School children and many residents too joined the volunteers during the drive. Interested palm seed donors can contact the team at 9841990704 and 9841005823.
