Chennai: Safety is at stake at Alandur Metro Rail bus stop on Grand Southern Trunk Road, Nanganallur, as frequent police patrol is missing at nights.
The bus stop connects the residents of the city to South-bound districts via Pallavaram and Tambaram. Commuters who take the bus route to the districts, including Villupuram and Madurai, rely on the Alandur bus stop.
Though there are no issues with the infrastructure, security needs to be beefed up. A visit to the bus stop at a late night hour on a busy Friday night proves a point – zero monitoring by police officials.
Tipplers sleep on the benches at the bus stop allotted for commuters. They also create nuisance to the general public which inconveniences the passengers, especially women.
A woman passenger waiting for a bus to Theni on Friday night said, Tipplers deliberately approach women and pass lewd comments. Even a few minutes wait at the bus stop is terrible.
Hygiene is another aspect that is taking a toll at Alandur bus stop. People, especially tipplers, litter the place, leaving no space for commuters to take a seat.
“A few months back, police patrolling was regular here. Now, due to the lack of monitoring, anti-social elements are increasing. During late nights, people sell tobacco products, the fact that makes many, especially drunkards, to come here and create nuisance,” said Venugopal K, a commuter.
“It is an important connecting point which requires patrolling. How can the police do their duty if they are sent to VIP bundobust?,” asked Venugopal.
