Chennai: Cricket frenzy is back in the city as all-India Buchi Babu Tournament got under way with 12 teams fighting it out for the top spot.
Big players like Suresh Raina and Mohit Sharma using this as an opportunity to get rid of some rust in their game, the tournament is sure to get exciting.
The opening day witnessed three matches while the fourth (TNCA Districts XI vs Haryana) was delayed due to bad ground conditions; two matches (TNCA Presidents XI vs Kerala and UPCA vs Chhattisgarh) started on time and the other, containing local team TNCA XI vs Baroda, had a delayed start due to a wet outfield.
Suresh Raina, from whom a lot was expected, went out for a paltry 16 runs, putting an end to expectations that were piled up on him. The game will be played as one innings and, hence, Raina fans will have to wait till 5 September to see him wield the willow again.
At lunch, UPCA were 149 for the loss of four wickets in 34 overs.
Kerala, meanwhile were struggling to get going against TNCA Presidents XI and ended up scoring 78 runs until lunch break for the loss of seven wickets. Many players, including favourite Washington Sundar will look to utilise the tournament to get a spot in the upcoming famed Ranji Trophy tournament and make a mark in the national cricketing arena.
Some players, including Raina however, will be heading off after playing a couple of games to take part in Duleep Trophy that starts on the 7th of this month.
To be held till 15 September, the Buchi Babu Trophy winners will receive Rs 1 lakh while the remaining top four teams get a fixed amount as well.
