Chennai: “I like to do films like Paruthiveeran. An actor should take up roles that not just entertain audience but leave a lasting impact on their minds,” says Ashok Selvan.
He plays the lead in Kottathil Ooruvan, which is releasing 28 July. Directed by Gnanavel, the movie speaks about ‘middle benchers’, who come up the hard way in their lives.
Excerpts of his interview
Q: What is Kottathil Ooruvan about?
A: It is about a guy who tries to finds himself. It tells how an average student becomes smart. How the transformation happens and why? I relate well with the character for I was below average during my school days. The movie speaks about the pain of middle benchers. When the first look of the film was released, no one could recognised me. I received positive feedback from my friends and family. It gave me courage.
Q: How do you choose a story?
A: Anything which is interesting will catch my attention. A director plays an important part in giving a good film. I choose a film keeping faith on the filmmaker.
Q: What kind of role you are more interested in doing?
A: ‘I like to do films like Paruthiveeran. An actor should take up roles that not just entertain audience but leave a lasting impact on their minds’.
Q: Will you be directing a movie in future?
A: Yes. I want to do both direction and production. But it would happen only after few years. It all depends on the story that I come across and again the director. A good film should have all ingredients mixed together in right proportion.
Q : What’s your opinion to the protests against the reality show Big Boss and its host Kamal Haasan?
A: I can say that there is no truth in the allegations that it is against our culture. I have seen few episodes of the show. People talk about it everywhere. Kamal Haasan is needlessly targetted.
