Amidst fantasies and eerie thrillers, a host of filmmakers in Tamil cinema is churning out films based on real life incidents.
News that hogged the headlines have inspired them to come out with 'engaging works' on the big screen.
They include the recent protests against jallikattu, methane extraction, Chennai-Salem Green Corridor, honour killings and lock-up deaths, among others.
Says an aspiring filmmaker, Rathnam, "Content of this kind would easily reach the audience. They are familiar with the incidents. The newspapers and television channels are full of them. If a filmmaker manages to add some value to it with his crisp writing, it is a winner."
Director Santhosh Gopal, whose 'Jallikattu 5-23 Jan 2017' is ready for release this year, has started work on his next film.
Similar to 'Jallikattu...', which is based on the famous Marina protest, this film, titled 'Pasumai Vazhi Saalai', is based on incidents surrounding the Salem eight-way road project.
The film stars Pasupathy and Kishore, and talks are on to rope in Prakash Raj and Nagarjuna for the lead roles.
Says the director, "We researched and shot the actual happenings — the surveyor marking the routes and villagers reacting to it — for 20 days. The story will be partly fictional, along with actual footage shot on location."
Actor Pandiarajan's son Prithvirajan is part of a movie titled 'Thodra', based on honour killing (Kausalya and Shankar). It is directed by K Bhagyaraj's assistant Madhuraj, who had distributed several films in the past.
Says Madhuraj, "My film speaks about contemporary relationships in society and how social strata divides people. It is based on two important real-life incidents that shook the northern districts of Tamilnadu. It would be an emotional drama like 'Kadhal'."
Remember the shootout that happened involving police and robbers in Velacheri a few years ago? Now it is being made into a movie. Titled 'Velacheri Thuppaki Soodu', the movie has Sarath Kumar playing an encounter specialist.
'Vaagai Sooda Vaa'-fame Ineya plays the heroine who is a human rights activist. The movie is directed by V T Vendhan.
Work on the movie began recently. Sources say that the shooting incident and the probe would form the crux of the story.
A movie, titled 'Nungambakkam', based on the murder of an IT professional (Swathi) in broad daylight by a stalker in Nungambakkam railway station has been completed.
'Kho'-fame Ajmal plays a police officer, who investigates the murder. There were protests from Swathi's family, forcing the filmmaker to change the title from 'Swathi Kolai Vazhakku' to 'Nungambakkam'.
Remember S Anitha, who aspired to become a doctor and ended up committing suicide when she couldn't crack NEET?
Anitha, who studied Samacheer Kalvi syllabus, scored good marks in board exams but couldn't pass NEET.
Now, a film is being made on the life of Anitha, and it will star Bigg Boss-fame Julie as the young student. Titled 'Dr S Anitha MBBS', the film is produced by RJ Pictures.
Actor Mahesh’s upcoming film 'Veerapuram' is based on a real-life incident that took place against the backdrop of an illegal sand-mining racket.
Talking about the project, director Senthilkumar says, "The film has a poignant subject. It’s about a young couple who are witness to illegal sand-mining activities. There’s a social message interlaced with the story, but it’s narrated in a lively manner rather than a preachy tone."
The film also features Meghna of 'Urudhikol'-fame as the heroine. It has been shot in Chengalpet, Chennai and Madurai.
