Shivaji's 'Raja' is back in theatres

Yesteryear Sivaji Ganesan's blockbuster Raja is back to entertain movie-lovers. The movie is re-released in a digital format.

A crime thriller it featured Jayalalithaa as heroine. Directed by C V Rajendran, it was produced by K Balaji. Raja has hit songs and catchy twits and turns in the film. S V Ranga Rao, K Balaji, R S Manohar, Major Sundarrajan and Chandrababu were part of the cast.

Released in 1972, the movie had music by M S Viswanathan and is a remake of the Hindi film Johny Mera Naam. The songs Kalyana Ponnu (T M Soundararajan), Irandil Ondru (S P Balasubrahmanyam, B Vasantha), Nee Vara Vendum (T M Soundararajan, Susheela) were big hit among music-buffs.

Says Baskar Sivaji, a die-hard fan of the thespian, "The movie is close to my heart. I watched it several times. I loved the style and swag of Sivaji Ganesan in Raja."

"Whenever it got re-released, it won distributors huge profits. In 1972, when it was released, it ran for 115 days. After this movie, Balaji named the hero in all his production venture as Raja and heroine as Radha. Chandrababu played triple roles in it."

In 1972 Sivaji Ganesan had seven releases. They include Raja, Gnanaoli, Pattikada Pattanama, Dharmam Yengae, Thavapudhalvan, Vasantha Maaligai and Needhi. Interestingly all ended up as blockbusters.

The movie is re-released by K N Nagaraj on behalf of Sri Velan Movies. He also released Sivaji starrers Sorgam and Thanga Surangam a few years ago.
