"If you don't get your act right in a movie, you are thoroughly exposed and you become a victim of memes all over the Internet. An actor has to keep that in mind always," says Madhavan.

Vikram Vedha, starring Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi in titular roles, is releasing Friday. Directed by Pushkar-Gayathri duo, the movie has Varalaxmi Sarath Kumar and Shraddha Srinath in pivotal roles.

From Minnale to Vikram Vedha, it has been a tremendous journey for Madhavan, who reinvented himself with every film, be it Tamil or Hindi.

Speaking about Vikram Vedha, he says, "When we were young, we have heard the story of Vikram and Vedalam. Vikram is always righteous and he has the ability to pass judgement according to Dharma. I am playing a ruthless cop and Vijay Sethupathi dons the role of a gangster. Vikram Vedha is one of the most exciting scripts I have done."

Excerpts from his interview:

Are you playing a good cop?

I am always the good cop. However, thanks to my directors Pushkar and Gayathri, I play a honest police officer, but the best point is that he is ruthless. I play an encounter specialist and will sport a stubble, unlike normal policemen. We did a lot of research before designing our characters. The film talks about the grey shades that exists between black and white.

How was it to work with Pushkar-Gayathri?

I thoroughly enjoyed working with Sudha in Irudhi Suttru. I can say that women directors always extract the best from me. Gayathri is no different. There’s no difference between working with a male director and a female filmmaker. Seriously, both are skilled writers. Everything was clean and clear.  Their thought process had utmost clarity.

What were the challenges involved in playing Vikram?

It is challenging, be it acting as a lover boy or a complicated character like Vikram. I have reached a stage where I pick and choose my character. Those roles that gives us immense satisfaction and help us get under its skin to deliver your best have come my way. I was thrilled for the movie satisfied the appetite of the actor in me.

On sharing the screen with Vijay Sethupathi.

After Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi is one of the most intelligent actors I have worked with. After the shooting began, I was wondering how to compete with him on-screen. It was a great honour to work with him. We bonded well and shared a great relationship. And when he is at work, he is professional and committed.

Will you continue to do multi-starrers?

Multi-hero subjects are not new to me. I have done films like Anbe Sivam, Ayidha Ezhuthu and a few Bollywood films. For me, the script and choosing apt characters are very important. Only then, the work will reach the audiences in the right way. I thoroughly enjoyed being part of Vikram Vedha.

Were you keen to get rid of your chocolate boy image?

I started with Alaipayuthae. It was followed by few romantic stories; however, my roles in Irudhi Suttru, Rang de Basanti were different. It was not a conscious decision. It just happened.

What is the impact of social media on cinema?

Social media is a great academic tool. It is a great technique to know what your audience feels about you and how you should modify yourself.
