Chennai: The Indian Singers Rights’ Association (ISRA) distributed Rs 51 lakh in royalties to singers P Susheela, K J Yesudas, S P Balasubrahmanyam, Vani Jairam, K S Chitra and Srinivas.

In March last year, SPB and others were slapped with legal notices by maestro Ilayaraja for using his songs without his permission and seeking royalty. This led to an ugly spat between SPB and Ilayaraja. Experts said Ilayaraja was right in asking for royalty if he owned the copyright to his music.

The royalties were paid by radio stations, TV channels, caller tunes, Internet portals such as Saavn and Gaana and even IPL teams, gyms and theme parks that have paid for the songs.

With only 25 per cent of royalties collected for now, ISRA believes next year, the amount might be more than Rs 1.2 crore.

The event was also a celebration for Yesudas' eighth national award as the best male playback singer.
