His maiden directorial venture, 'Kolamaavu Kokila' ('COCO'), starring Nayanthara, is ready for release this August. It is said to be a hilarious entertainer.
Speaking to 'News Today', Nelson says, "'Kolakaavu Kokila' will be engaging and entertaining too."
Excerpts from his interview:
Q: Why did you choose the title 'Kolamaavu Kokila'?
A: it is a light-hearted, action crime thriller. Nayanthara plays the title role -Kokila. How her life feels changes after she gets kolamaavu is what the story is about. Kolamaavu here refers to 'drugs.' I haven't worked as assistant to any filmmaker. I directed a few film award functions. But there is always a passion to excel on the big screen.
Q: How did you prepare Nayanthara for the title role?
A: I am a good friend of Simbu. Hence, I know Nayanthara since 'Vallavan' was released. I wrote 'Kolamaavu Kokila' as a woman-centric story and thought Nayanthara would be apt for the lead. I narrated the story to her. She was impressed and readily agreed to be part of the project. She always gives her best if she is convinced about her role. 'Kolamaavu Kokila' has come out very well thanks to her.
Q: Tell us about the movie.
A: Nayanthara plays a staff in a spa. The story is set in Gummidipoondi. She is the only breadwinner in her family. Saranya Ponvannan plays her mom, while Vijay TV fame Jacqueline is cast as Nayanthara's sister. It is a crime thriller with a different background.
Q: How did you manage to get Anirudh on board?
A: Anirudh is my best friend. Though it is not a big budget movie, he has spent a lot of time to give good tunes and great musical effects. Thanks to him, my film stands very strong now.
Q: Did you expect 'Kalyana Vayasudhan' song to become such a big hit?
A: We came up with the song to reach people. It was our plan to do such a number which will be admired by all. It will bring more audience to the theatres.
Q: How do you rate Sivakarthikeyan as a lyricist?
A: Everyone involved in the film genuinely wanted me to succeed. They gave their best. Initially, Sivakarthikeyan was hesitant to write the song. But later, gathered guts, he gave wonderful lyrics. Vignesh Shiva and Arunraja Kamarajah also wrote songs. Interestingly, no one took remuneration. I am grateful to them.
