Work on multi-level facility starts in Chennai

Chennai: One of the major initiatives under the Smart City project earmarked for T Nagar in the city is the development of a Multi-Level Car Parking (MLCP) facility at Thanikachalam Road junction,  recently commenced with piling work at the site.

“The facility, as part of Area Based Development (ABD), expands the proposed surface parking space vertically to six levels, which is designed to allow multi-level storage spaces with user-friendly operations,” sources from Chennai Smart City Limited (CMCL), said.

It may be noted that sometime back, a bhoomi pooja was performed at the site in the presence of few State Ministers.

For residents, on the other hand, it is a wait and watch situation, as a part of Singaravelu Street was closed to facilitate the ongoing project.

As a result, several hawkers located here were temporarily shifted to adjacent Masilamani Street which currently sees unexpected traffic levels.

“Without proper notice, they have closed the traffic from Pondy Bazaar side. This has led to increased congestion in our street with hawkers occupying the pavements,” said a woman resident of Masilamani Street.

When News Today took up the issue with the civic body, an official from Corporation Ward 136 who is connected to the initiative, said, “The multi-level parking is a significant development in the area.”

“Since the move involves additional space for logistical reasons, the road is temporarily blocked and will be revived after inauguration of the facility,” he added.

Explaining the merits of the process, an official of CMCL, said,”MLCP ensures maximum utilisation of ground space without adding unnecessary clutter and volume. It allows for quick entry and exit of cars due to the operational independence of its multiple lifts.

“It is also designed to be seamless to improve drivers’ parking convenience significantly with average vehicle retrieval times of less than a minute. It is governed by fully automated systems which reduce operation costs while offering multiple safety guarantees to drivers and their cars, as well as operators.”
