Women empowerment from grassroots level

Chennai: Women empowerment need not be on larger scales where a vibrant manager like Indira Nooyi becoming the CEO of a multinational company or a cosmonaut like Kalpana Chawla measuring the length and breadth of space. Empowerment can be something that gives a woman independence to lead her livelihood.

Sri Jayam Magalir Nala Sangam at Valasaravakkam in the city has spent the past 12 months helping women in the locality with funds from the Central and State governments. Stepping into its second year, the association now aims to reach out to a larger beneficiary base.

Speaking to News Today, Padmini, an office-bearer of the association said, “The purpose of the association is to educate women on their choice of classes and prepare them for self-employment. The training is free and is given by experienced trainers for women who are interested in learning professional skills.”

When asked, about the courses they offer, Padmini said, “Most of our courses are basic, professional and skill-based. Trainees will get the ability to start a business of their own very soon. Those who complete the course will be presented with a government certification. Not stopping there, we also get them assistance from banks to help them start their business.”

So far more than 40 women have benefitted due to the association’s efforts. “Every woman who has completed the beautification course are now employed in a beauty salon in the area. We take pride in stating that many of our trainees have started to earn a considerable sum, working from their home,” she said.
