Chennai: Greater Chennai Commissioner of Police AK Viswanathan today ordered suspension of a policewoman for indulging in shoplifting at a supermarket at Chetpet.

The video of the incident, which went viral in the social media, brought embarrassment to the police department.

Identified as Nandhini, the policewoman was caught red handed while picking up items from the rack and shoving inside her pocket.

An employee Pranav took note of the stealing and demanded her to return the things.

Later, the policewoman's husband and a few others stormed inside the shop and repeatedly attacked Pranav. In the incident, he sustained injuries and was taken to a hospital for a medical treatment.

The news comes just days after the Chennai police were involved in another case of police brutality after a youth was attacked by a Sub-Inspector for not paying a bribe.

Commissioner Viswanathan later visited the youth at his residence and expressed regret.
