Chennai: While dumping garbage along the waterbodies have become a common sight, here is a peculiar case where the residents in and around Kallikuppam in the city are silently discarding off the household waste in the public utility wells.

Having wells is one of the most economical way to access the groundwater. However, the ones in Perumal Koil street, School street and Pillayar Koil street in the locality are gradually becoming dump yards.

When the residents living in the area had approached the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) to clear the wells, the board, it is said, abruptly turned down request claiming that it the wells belong to the Public Works Department (PWD).

Since three years, the residents have been made to run from pillar to post to get a solution, sadly, the authorities are allegedly failing to take up the responsibility.

Talking about the issue, Ramalingam R, president, West Balaji Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association, said,”We had requested the CMWSSB officials to clean up the wells so that the wells can be recharged and used it for every day chores. They outrightly pointed the fingers to the PWD and we have written to them requesting to take responsibility of the wells.”

When ‘News Today’ tried to reach out to PWD, the official concerned was unavailable.
