Chennai: VGN Nagar at Iyyappanthangal in the city suburb is located nearĀ  Krishna river water canal. At present, water has been stagnant at the place for past few months.

When Senthil, a social activist and a resident of VGN Nagar wrote to the authorities about it, he got replies that saw the two departments accusing each other.

Speaking about this, Senthi said, "I wrote to the CMWSSB and the Corporation about the problem. The Metrowater officers immediately came to the spot and checked the pipelines. They said the pipelines are normal and that there is no leak. So, I wrote to the Corporation regarding the amtter. They replied that the canal comes under the Krishna river and it needs to be looked after by the Metro Water department only. Due to the fight between the two departments, the water stagnation continues, leading to health issues."

Many residents of the area have been affected. Having not cleared the stagnated water, authorities are not concerned about the mosquito generation as well, said residents.

Mohan, a resident of the area, said, "This problem has been going on for a long time. However, no body seems to care. People are getting affected with diseases and plus the stench makes it unbearable to reside here. In the end, it is us residents who are suffering. It is not sure when the two departments will resolve the issue and do the needful work."

Also, the canal is slowly being enroached as well. Iyyappanthangal residents say that if the canal dispute is not solved soon, then there will be major problems in the coming months.
