Chennai: A new park was recently opened by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami through video conferencing, at Ramachandran Street, Santhosh Nagar in Mugalivakkam in the city.

The greenery was built at a cost of Rs 85 lakh and is spread over 5,211 square metre. The park was under construction for long and residents now heave a sigh of relief as it has been opened. Many have started using it for relaxing and playing.

The park has a wide walking area and a pebbles path. LED lights and parking facility are an added advantage. Toilets are also available here. Officials said that purified drinking water plant will be installed soon. They have also appointed a full time garden-keeper and a watchman to look after the facility.

“This park is a boon for locals. In the evenings, we take our grandchildren to the place and spend quality time with them. It is also a good place to do exercise,” said Venkatanarayanan, a senior citizen from Mugalivakkam.

“At most parks in Porur, parking is a major issue. But here, spacious parking lot is available. The toilets are also maintained well,” said Vijay, a resident here.

Although the park has several amenities, residents unanimously feel that the closing time be extended. “Children enjoy playing here and they come here only by 7 pm after finishing their homework. The park closes by 8 pm. So, one hour is not enough for them. Therefore it would be good if the closing time is extended. Although many bring their own water, may feel that authorities should provide a drinking water facility,” said Ramakrishnan, another resident.
