Chennai: In an achievement that has brought pride to Selaiyur in the city suburban area, K Ramesh, popularly known as ‘Vaathiyar’ in Dallas Nagar, Sembakkam, has been presented with the ‘Dream Teacher’ award, instituted by the State government. He speaks to News Today.

Q: Tell us about yourself.

A: I was born in a village near Tiruchi. I took science group in classes 11 and 12 and studied at the Zamindhar Higher Secondary School, Kaatuputhur.

My story is no different from others who studied during that period. Things were quite difficult. In fact, I did not have any proper dress to wear. My father actually wanted me to start working after I completed my class 12. But it was due to the efforts of my brother that I was able to continue my studies. After M Sc Botany, I joined B Ed in Kumarapalayam College. After that, I came to Chennai in search of a job.

Q: About your stint as a teacher.

A: I started my career as a Science teacher in Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya in Tambaram. In 2010, I got a government job in Villupuram. Then in 2011, I got transferred to a school in Esur, Madurantakam.

One year after I joined here, several infrastructure developments, including the construction of a library, took place on the premises. I am part of the committee which made the new Science books for classes six and classes nine.

Q: A few words about the current education system.

A: The present system is the best in the past few years. Technology has advanced so much that students get a real feel of what we are teaching. Earlier, it was only with a chalkpiece and board that training was done, but there are computers available in almost all schools now.

Q: How has teaching changed over the years?

A: We will have to keep ourselves updated to teach students. Since I am a Science teacher, I have to be practical. At present, there is no point in being strict, we will have to be friendly with the children.

Q: What are your future plans for the institution?

A: When I joined here, it was just a middle school. A year later, after my efforts, it was upgraded to a high school. Now, I want to ensure that the students get all the facilities available to private school counterparts in the city.
