Solid waste management in Chennai suburban area

Chennai: Gandhi Park at East Tambaram in the city suburb was the centre of attraction when officials of the State government inspected the ongoing solid waste management work.

Municipal Administration Commissioner G Prakash, Rural Development Director K Baskaran, Kanchipuram Collector P Ponnaiah, Municipal Administration Regional Director M Elangovan were among the officials who visited the park.

They also took stock of other places in and around the area where the solid waste management works are on.

An official from the Municipal Administration Department said they are taking measures to reduce waste that is being sent to landfills.

Organisations like hotels, markets, resident welfare associations who generate maximum waste must split them into biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, the official said.

He said the concept of forming micro-compost yards have begun at Municipal Corporations in Vellore and Tiruchi.

It became popular and Tambaram Municipality followed the trend by constructing 20 small micro-compost yards and seven big micro-compost yards, the official said.
