Rise in mosquito menace worries Chennaiites

Chennai: It is not winter but still the worries of residents of several streets in Saidapet in the city remain as mosquitoes are seen aplenty in the area giving them a tough time.

Several residents complain about storm water blockages that lead to such a menace in pockets of the area.

Taking up the issue with News Today, Saravana Kumar, a resident said "After the floods and cyclone, the drainages have not been attended to properly by the concerned authorities which lead to mushrooming growth of mosquitoes in the area."

"Our area, surrounded by Coovum canal, is the worst affected as the sewage lines are not desilted so far," he complained.

On an enquiry with residents in streets like Jayaram Street, Mosque Street, Kothawalchavadi Street, they agreed to the point that the small killer insects are seen largely during dark hours and are uncontrollable.

One such resident of Kothawalchavadi Street said "They are rampant. With heat condition shooting up day by day, we fear our children may get affected when the mosquitoes bite them during nights."

"Before the vacation for the children begins, the corporation should initiate action to curb the mosquito menace in the area," he pleaded.
