Residents in Chennai area take to cleaning up lake

Chennai: Purely driven by residents of the the city at Ambattur, Ambattur Waterbodies Rejuvenation Movement has taken up the local ponds to restore.

The committee had organised a walk covering Vairavan pond, Karuppan pond, Vannaan pond, Gnanamurthy Nagar pond, Siva Vishnu Temple Pond, Aaraa pond and Chedai Pond in Ambattur area.

Depending on the level of cooperation from the local residents, the team has planned to take up lakes for restoration.

Talking about it, S P Nedumaran, president of the organisation, said,”Residents surrounding Vairavan pond have extended their support for us to restore the lake. Though we are unsure if we would be able to get rid of the encroachments, we plan to desilt the pond and make sure sewage is not mixed with it. Slowly, we plan to rejuvenate other ponds in the locality.”
