Chennai: Transporting becomes a herculean task in the city, whenever it rains. Things become all the more difficult for those who are dependent on MTC buses to reach their destination.

Nicholas, a resident of Velacheri said that he was stranded for close to one hour in Guindy to get back home when it rained on Monday.

"The scenario was no different on Tuesday as there were no frequent buses to get back to work," he added. A few commuters also complained about rain water leakage into MTC buses making commuting difficult.

Speaking to News Today, a MTC official said that regular buses are plying in the city and the reduction in the numbers in the past two days may be because of the schools declaring holiday.

"The delay in the buses were also due to traffic jam. Duty drivers and conductors were held up in the rain. There were no incidences of breakdowns reported in the past two days and all buses are in good condition," he claimed.

He further stated that the monsoon maintenance of the buses were taken up a month ago. "All the wipers, windows and engine maintenance were carried out during the special drive held last month. Depots have been directed to keep standby buses in case if something goes wrong with a bus," the official said.

The official stated that water stagnation at depots were cleared by themselves. "At Thiruvanmiyur depot, water was pumped out. It is usually the Corporation that has to do the work, but the MTC officials did the work themselves," he said.

It may be noted that MTC operates 3,200 buses everyday in city.
